2000 – Sydney, Australia
The 2000 Summer Games in Sydney began with an impressive opening ceremony that highlighted Australian history from the aboriginal people to the settlers of the outback.
Team Australia was fourth in entire Olympic medal count, following the United States, Russia, and China. Birgit Fischer of Germany earned two gold medals in kayaking, becoming the first woman to win medals twenty years apart.
During the Olympic Games, the wife of outgoing International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch died. Samaranch returned home once discovering his wife was seriously ill but unfortunately did not arrive in Spain before her death.
