The 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece
After losing the bid for the centennial games in 1996, in 2004 the Summer Games returned to Athens, Greece in the XXVIII Olympiad.
Throughout the planning and construction for the Olympic Games in Athens, there were concerns about whether Athens would be ready on time for the Olympic Games. Security and terrorism concerns were also a major focus as the 2004 Games were the first since the terror attacks of September 11, 2001.
Swimmer Michael Phelps won six gold medals and set a single-Games record with eight total medals.
10,625 athletes from every country on earth competed in 301 events.
